Your First Evening in Salt Lake City: A Low-Pressure Orientation Plan
For a first evening in Salt Lake City, I’d stay downtown: Main Street, a stop at Gallivan Center, then dinner nearby. There’s enough here for a walk without turning arrival day into another excursion. The full version suits an early arrival with some energy left. Coming in hungry or tired, you can start with dinner and leave most of the walking for tomorrow.
Main Street to Gallivan Center
After dropping your bags, start at Main Street and South Temple and head south. You’ll cross 100 South, then 200 South. The street numbers count outward in hundreds from Temple Square, so this little stretch introduces Salt Lake’s downtown grid as you walk it. Keep Main Street as your reference rather than zigzagging between attractions.
At 239 South Main, turn into Gallivan Center. The plaza sits inside the block between Main and State streets and 200 and 300 South. Its green space, amphitheater and public art give you something to stop for before dinner. On an event night, you might stay for a performance. Otherwise, take a seat and spend a little time in the plaza.
Look for Kazuo Matsubayashi’s Asteroid Landing Softly, a sundial with a sandstone rock balanced on a tower. Copper covers the lower part, while reflective glass brings the surrounding buildings and sky into the sculpture.
I’d allow about an hour for the walk and plaza stop, then keep the rest of the evening for dinner. Gallivan closes at 10 p.m., so it belongs before a late meal. Turn back along Main Street whenever you’ve had enough.
Dinner on Gallivan Avenue or Main Street
From Scratch, at 62 East Gallivan Avenue, keeps dinner close to the plaza. It serves pizza and pasta and makes its own bread and sauces. Its hours run to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. It is closed on Sundays.
For this route, I’d aim to sit down around 7 or 8 p.m., rather than spend the entire evening walking and arrive at a restaurant just as it closes. If you reach the hotel around dinner time, reverse the order: eat first, then see whether you still want the Gallivan stop. You don’t need to return to South Temple to begin the walk from the top.
For a Sunday arrival, Eva is an option farther south on Main Street, at 317 South Main, beyond 300 South. It serves small plates and lists dinner hours of 5–10 p.m. every day. Choose a few dishes to share, or order for yourself, and keep the evening in the same part of downtown. Eva takes reservations as well as walk-ins.
When dinner is enough
A later arrival calls for a smaller version of the route. If you’re ready to go out before 8 p.m., dinner can still be the main event, with a brief walk afterward. Near 9 p.m., I’d drop the plaza plan and make food the priority. Eva’s posted hours offer more room than From Scratch on a weeknight, but arriving near closing is a reason to contact the restaurant before setting out.
After 10 p.m., skip Gallivan and the sit-down dinner plan. For a late bite, Pie Hole at 344 South State Street serves pizza by the slice and lists hours of 11 a.m.–3 a.m. seven days a week. State Street is one street east of Main. Pick up a slice or two, then head back to the hotel.
The tired or rainy version is simpler still: dinner, then the hotel. Gallivan is outdoors. In rain or uncomfortable cold, go straight to your meal. If you want a little orientation, walk a short part of Main Street on the way to your meal. The next morning is a better time for the longer wander when you no longer have a flight behind you.
Getting downtown from the airport
The TRAX Green Line runs from the airport to downtown. The airport station is on the ground level outside the east side of the terminal, through door 1A. A one-way fare is $2.50. Pick the downtown stop nearest your hotel rather than going straight to the start of the walk with your luggage.
Some short downtown rides fall inside UTA’s Free Fare Zone. Both boarding and exit stops must be within the zone to ride free. The airport journey requires a fare. Check the Green Line departure for your arrival time, especially for a late flight. When the train and the walk from its stop do not suit your luggage or timing, arrange a transfer to the hotel.
Great guide great information and great deal for the money.
