When Travel Doesn’t Go as Planned: Our Bonneville Salt Flats Adventure
Aug 21, 2025
A cautionary tale from Utah’s legendary salt flats that turned into our most popular content
The Perfect Beginning
Not every trip goes smoothly — and honestly, that’s what makes travel so memorable. Recently, we set off on what was supposed to be a simple day trip to the legendary Bonneville Salt Flats. We weren’t even in our Sprinter this time, but in a pickup truck that seemed “good enough” for the journey.
Spoiler: it wasn’t.
The day started perfectly. We spent hours wandering across the endless white landscape, taking hundreds of photos, laughing, and enjoying the surreal beauty of this natural wonder. The pristine salt flats stretched endlessly in every direction, creating that otherworldly atmosphere that makes Bonneville such a photographer’s paradise.
When Adventure Takes a Turn
But when it was time to drive a little deeper into Bonneville, our adventure took an unexpected turn.
About 30 minutes in, the truck sank. Not just a little — three wheels went straight down into gray, salty mud. Beneath that shining crust of salt lies a tricky mix of water and clay, and we found it the hard way.
The Reality Check
For the next hour and a half, we tried everything:
- Digging around the wheels
- Pushing with all our might
- Looking around for anyone nearby who might help (spoiler: there was no one)
No luck. The sun was blazing — about 113°F (45°C) — and the situation wasn’t exactly funny in the moment.
The Silver Lining
But, as it turns out, it made for some of the best content we’ve ever filmed. Our “stuck in the mud” video ended up being one of the most popular posts we’ve shared on social media. Apparently, people love watching travel fails!
Eventually, we called for help. After a long wait, a rescue truck arrived and pulled us out — with a bill that was definitely not cheap. But hey, we got out, and we left Bonneville with more than just photos: we left with a story we’ll never forget.
The Real Lesson
And that’s the point — not every journey will be perfect. Nature doesn’t always play by our rules. Things happen:
- Cars get stuck
- Weather changes
- Plans fall apart
But every experience is part of the adventure. The key is to stay calm, keep your sense of humor, and remember that even the stressful moments become the stories you’ll tell later.
What We Learned
For Future Bonneville Visitors
If you’re planning a trip to Bonneville Salt Flats, here’s what our expensive lesson taught us:
Vehicle Preparation:
- High-clearance 4WD vehicles are strongly recommended
- Check current conditions before venturing onto the flats
- Bring recovery equipment (tow straps, shovel, traction boards)
Safety First:
- Travel with extra water (especially in summer heat)
- Inform someone of your plans and expected return
- Consider satellite communication devices for emergencies
- Never venture out alone
Timing Matters:
- Late summer and fall typically offer the most solid surface
- Avoid the flats after recent rainfall
- Early morning and late afternoon provide the best lighting and cooler temperatures
The Bottom Line
So if you ever find yourself in Bonneville — or anywhere out in the wild — be prepared, stay safe, and most importantly, keep a smile. Because at the end of the day, travel isn’t just about the places you visit, it’s about the stories you collect along the way.
Our costly mistake became our most engaging content, taught us valuable lessons about preparation, and gave us a story that perfectly captures the unpredictable nature of adventure travel.
