The Opportunity

International Visitors Deserve a Better First Impression

International visitors often navigate unfamiliar transportation systems, destinations, visitor resources, and cultural environments. Language and cultural differences can make these interactions more difficult, particularly at high-traffic tourism destinations.

The Utah Bilingual Tourism Ambassador Training Program is being developed to strengthen visitor readiness by preparing bilingual participants in visitor communication, cultural awareness, destination knowledge, professional role boundaries, and appropriate referral to official visitor resources and services.

The Program

How It Works

A practical training program built for Utah's visitor economy, focused on bilingual communication, cultural awareness, destination knowledge, and international guest support. Participation is completely free.

01

Apply

Bilingual Utah residents sign up. No prior tourism experience needed — just conversational fluency in a second language and an interest in helping international visitors.

02

Train

A half-day structured course (4 hours) covering:

  • Visitor interaction and hospitality fundamentals
  • Cultural awareness and communication techniques
  • Utah destination knowledge — parks, attractions, logistics
  • Professional role boundaries and referral to official visitor resources
  • Practical scenarios and role-play exercises
  • Open-book assessment
03

Get Ready

Participants complete practical exercises, review real visitor scenarios, and prepare to support international guests with confidence.

04

Participate

After completing the training and competency assessment, participants may have opportunities to take part in supervised visitor-support activities with participating host organizations. Any practical activity will take place only at approved locations and will be subject to written authorization, host-site requirements, and applicable laws and policies.

Participation Model

Free Training. Practical Skills. Community Impact.

Participation in the training program is free of charge. Participants receive structured instruction in visitor communication, cultural awareness, Utah destination knowledge, professional role boundaries, and practical visitor-support scenarios.

Participation in training is not conditioned on providing unpaid services to Matei Travel LLC. Any future volunteer opportunities will be separate from Matei Travel's commercial tour operations and will be coordinated, where appropriate, with participating public, nonprofit, community, or other eligible host organizations under their applicable policies and requirements.

The program is intended to help participants develop transferable skills relevant to tourism, hospitality, visitor services, and cross-cultural communication.

Why Utah

A Strong Foundation for a Bilingual Tourism Pilot

Utah has a diverse population of residents with multilingual abilities and international or cross-cultural experience. This includes immigrants, international students, heritage-language speakers, residents who have lived abroad, and others interested in using their language skills to support Utah's visitor economy.

Language Fluency

Conversational and working fluency in languages from Mandarin to Portuguese to Russian to Tagalog.

Cultural Competency

Familiarity with other cultures gained through living abroad, heritage languages, and everyday cross-cultural experience.

Service Experience

Backgrounds in customer service, education, guiding, and community support in unfamiliar settings.

Community Engagement

Opportunities to apply language and cross-cultural skills in meaningful visitor-support and community settings.

The program is open to qualified bilingual Utah residents from a wide range of backgrounds. This diverse participant base provides a strong foundation for testing and refining a structured bilingual visitor-support training model.

Why Now

Three Factors Shaping Utah's Visitor Readiness

01

Bilingual Community Capacity

Utah includes residents with substantial foreign-language and cross-cultural experience who represent a valuable source of community knowledge and skills for international visitor engagement.

02

Salt Lake Temple Open House and Temple Square Visitor Activity

Following the current renovation, public open-house tours of the Salt Lake Temple are scheduled from April 5 through October 1, 2027. This extended period of visitor activity provides additional context for strengthening visitor readiness and multilingual communication resources in the Salt Lake City area.

03

2034 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games

Utah's role as host of the 2034 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games provides a long-term context for strengthening international visitor readiness, cross-cultural communication, and destination-service capacity. The Utah Bilingual Tourism Ambassador Training Program is an independent initiative and is not affiliated with, sponsored by, endorsed by, or part of the Olympic or Paralympic organizing bodies unless such a relationship is separately established in writing.

Beyond the Utah Pilot

A Utah Pilot Designed for Broader Use

The Utah Bilingual Tourism Ambassador Training Program is being developed as an initial pilot for creating, testing, and evaluating a standardized bilingual visitor-support training model.

The program is intended to document core training modules, competency criteria, professional role boundaries, practical implementation methods, and outcome-measurement tools. Following evaluation of the Utah pilot, these components may be refined and adapted to the visitor demographics, tourism infrastructure, local requirements, and partnership models of other U.S. tourism destinations.

The objective is not to reproduce the Utah program identically in every location, but to develop a documented and adaptable framework that can inform similar visitor-readiness initiatives in different tourism regions.
